The State of Brandenburg has numerous highly capable scientific institutions. The universities in Potsdam, Cottbus/Senftenberg and Frankfurt (Oder), the universities of applies sciences in Brandenburg an der Havel, Eberswalde, Wildau, Potsdam, as well as the oldest German movie school, the University of Film and Television “Konrad Wolf ” in Potsdam-Babelsberg, provide many attractive options for studying and focusing on innovative research.

Over 50,000 students are currently registered at these third-level colleges. In addition, students from abroad or from other German federal states are increasingly choosing Brandenburg as their study location. The universities and colleges are modern and well-equipped, with an international focus, allowing students to structure their courses individually. In addition, they are excellent places to be for families. Thus well qualified young academics are on hand both in Brandenburg and beyond.

Brandenburg has 19 extra-mural institutions in total, representing the major national research facilities: The Fraunhofer Society, the Hermann von Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres, the Leibniz Association and the Max Planck Society. The cooperative efforts between these extra-mural research institutions and the universities set an excellent example for the whole of the country and provide additional opportunities for scientists, researchers and students.

Brandenburg is home to a wide range of research fields – extending from basic and innovative research to application orientated R&D. In highly modernised facilities like the Telegrafenberg in Potsdam, top level research is being conducted (such as the “Tsunami Early Warning System”), concentrating in particular on climate and geological research. The Science Campus in Potsdam-Golm focuses on innovation, biotechnology and gravitational physics. Currently, 2,500 people are working there. Further excellent research institutions can be found at other locations.
